A new approach and insights on modelling the impact of production diseases on dairy cow welfare

F. Edwardes, M. van der Voort, T.B. Rodenburg, H. Hogeveen

Published in 2023

Scientific article developing a method that uses information from experts to quantify the perceived impact of sub-optimal mobility on the welfare of dairy cows. The wider objective is to quantify the impact of health disorders on animal welfare, and to detect and treat these disorders as early as possible in order to improve animal welfare.

Animal welfare as a public good

Romain Espinosa, Nicolas Treich

Published in 2023

Article developing a model of animal consumption based on consumer altruism. According to this model, at the point where the market achieves equilibrium, quality is not  high enough and the quantity of animals whose lives are not worth living is too high.

Animal board invited review: Quantification of resilience in farm animals

M. Taghipoor, M. Pastell, O. Martin, H. Nguyen Ba, J. van Milgen, A. Doeschl-Wilson, C. Loncke, N.C. Friggens, L. Puillet, R. Muñoz-Tamayo

Published in 2023

Scientific article on the detection and quantification of the responses of farm animals to changes in their environment as a means to classify them individually according to their level of resilience. To this purpose, the authors analyze the use of different modeling approaches to data generation from high-throughput recordings.

A method for calculating the external costs of farm animal welfare based on the Welfare Quality® Protocol

Luuk S. M. Vissers, Coen P. A. van Wagenberg, Willy H. M. Baltussen

Published in 2023

This article presents a method to estimate the external costs of farm animal welfare and thereby help decision-making for the development and adoption of more welfare-friendly production systems. It includes  a calculation for the relationship between animal welfare scores and the costs of animal welfare measures on farms. It has been tested and validated on a dairy cattle farm, a pig farm and a poultry farm.

Review: The challenge to integrate Animal Welfare indicators into the Life Cycle Assessment

L. Lanzoni, L. Whatford, A. Atzori, M. Chincarini, M. Giammarco, I. Fusaro, G. Vignola

Published in 2023

Scientific literature review of publications that consider the impact of livestock systems on both the environment and animal welfare. It shows that environmental impact assessment using life cycle assessment (LCA) has a much more consistent, standardized and thorough methodology than animal welfare assessments. It concludes that research is needed to integrate animal welfare assessment into LCA.

Unwilling or Unable? Using 3D tracking to evaluate dogs' reactions to differing human intentions

Christoph J. Völter, Lucrezia Lonardo, Maud G.G.M. Steinmann, Carolina Frizzo Ramos, Karoline Gerwisch, Monique-Theres Schranz, Iris Dobernig, Ludwig Huber

Published in 2022

Scientific paper showing that machine learning can reveal the cognitive capacity in pet dogs to distinguish between unwilling/unable motivational behaviours in humans: analysis based on 3D-tracking through machine learning reveals that dogs distinguish between similar actions (ie not giving them food) on the basis of human intentionality (being unable/not wanting to feed them).
