Preview: A survey in the Rhone area has revealed that only one third of farms prepare cows for calving in groups until they give birth, and just 23% provide them with a measured diet.

"After thirty years of advice, where have we got to on the management of transition cows?", asks Alexandre Batia, advisor at SPEL (the livestock management advisory body for the Rhône area). To satisfy their professional conscience, the advisors carried out a survey of 84 dairy farms in the Rhône. While practices have changed, the picture remains quite a mixed one.
