Preview: As the French public's interest in animals increases, a number of French universities have, since 2015, begun to offer humanities and social science courses on the place of animals in society.

It all began in 2015 when the University of Strasbourg offered  animal ethics as a specialist area of study. This has been followed by university diplomas (DUs) in animal law from the University of Limoges and the University of Toulon. And in September 2019, it was the turn of the "animals and society"  diploma from the University of Rennes-II to be in the news. All these courses are evidence of the same trend: the study of animals is no longer exclusive to the sciences but is now becoming part of teaching and training in the human and social sciences as well. And this is just the start.
