Preview: Purpose of the 2023-2024 programme
Visits to pig farms concern matters of animal welfare. It is essential to support farmers in the transition towards compliance with the regulations introduced in recent years, to explain changes and to reduce the number of compliance issues noted during animal protection inspections.
The objectives of the visits are as follows:
- to ensure that the farmer knows the regulations concerning light levels, manipulable materials and watering, and understands what is at stake for their animals;
- to provide them with recommendations tailored to their farm;
- to make them aware of the risk factors in tail docking and the regulations concerning tail docking;
- to inform them of changes to the regulations with regard to designated on-farm animal welfare adivsors and to the routes to bringing an end to the castration of piglets without anaesthetic.
