Preview: What if we were to slaughter farm animals in a different way? Keeping them on the farm, for example? Numerous  livestock farmers would like this, offering their animals a dignified end to life, avoiding not just the stress associated with the journey to the abattoir, but also the conditions in which animals are processed and killed in these facilities. Although already more than forty European regulations govern abattoirs, today's legislation facilitates alternative methods of slaughter: options that allow animals to be slaughtered as close to their home farm as possible. This is the choice made by Ferme du Soleil Levant, a dairy sheep farm in the Rhône region, which in February 2024 obtained final approval to slaughter its sheep directly on the farm. The farmer carries out this work himself, in a micro-abattoir located next to the sheepfold. The work is certainly delicate but, he says, it is much more meaningful. Listen to the podcast
