European parliamentary question on the need for flexibility and practical solutions in responding to the the requirement for young organic poultry to be given access to outdoor areas, so that animal welfare needs and structural or health constraints can be reconciled. The Commission reminds the deputy that Regulation (EU) 2018/848 provides for continuous outdoor access for at least one-third of a bird's life, sets minimum surface areas for modular areas and provides for transitional periods in which to adapt facilities.

Final report - EFTA Surveillance Authority's follow-up audit to Norway from 20 to 24 January 2025 on protection of laying hens and chickens kept for meat production

Developing appropriate environmental enrichment strategies for broiler breeders

Study of environmental enrichment preferences in broiler broodstock reared commercially. The results show a clear preference for platform perches and interest in hanging observation balls. Additional dust baths proved of little use under well-maintained litter conditions.

The government favors a voluntary approach, and is working on a labeling trial inspired by that for eggs. The Anses is carrying out an expert appraisal to harmonize standards and ensure that they are appropriate.

Outdoor access versus conventional broiler chicken production: Updated review of animal welfare, food safety, and meat quality

Review article comparing the animal welfare, food safety and meat quality performance of the conventional and free-range broiler sectors in the USA. The data revealed advantages and disadvantages to both farming systems,  and results are not comparable from one study to the next. As most of the scientific data was obtained from outside the USA, a need was identified for studies specific to USA to be carried out.
