This article by Léa Lansade, a researcher in ethology at IFCE/INRAE, provides an overview of scientific knowledge on vision in horses which is very different from that of humans. For example, a horse's field of vision is much wider than ours, it does not perceive certain colours and it is very sensitive to contrasts. Knowing these particular characteristics makes it possible for us to adapt how we look after horses and to work them in a way that respects their welfare. It also allows us to understand a horse's fear responses in certain contexts and thus to provide a safe environment in which to establish a relationship with the horse.
