Preview: Since 2017, the French livestock and meat sector has been committed to a proactive social responsibility approach known as the "Social Commitment Pact", is certified to AFNOR's level 3 ("confirmed") of the four levels of the "CSR Commitment" label, and has published its first social responsibility report.

This comprehensive document provides an update on the industry's progress in fulfilling its commitments and reports the first actions to increase the sustainability of French meat production. Its contents are concrete and organised, setting out the key issues, identified in particular through lengthy consultation with public authorities, the scientific world and NGOs with an interest in environmental and animal protection. It also uses precise and quantifiable indicators that make it possible to measure the impact of actions taken and changes over time.

This report provides a new core element in opening up a dialogue with the public on the "Mieux Manger" (Eat Better) campaign and the joint initiative "AIMEZ LA VIANDE, MANGEZ-EN MIEUX", launched by the livestock and meat interprofessional group in early 2019, supported by the "Naturellement Flexitariens" logo.

As Bruno Dufayet, farmer and Chairman of the INTERBEV Commission on Social Issues, points out, "Our Social Commitment Pact means that we offer consumers meat that packs more than just proteins. Of course there are the other important nutrients and the pleasures of fine flavours and good company, but the pact is also about the living land, its landscapes and green meadows, animal welfare guarantees and reduced environmental impact".
