Document type: Written answer from the European Commission

Authors: Question: Henna Virkkunen. Answer: Ms Kyriakides on behalf of the European Commission

Answer: To ensure that the EU legislation on the protection of animals during transport is correctly applied, the Commission has audited several Member States within a three-year project (2017-2019). This project focused exclusively on the welfare of animals transported on long distances and exported to non-EU countries by road and by sea.

In parallel, the Commission is cooperating with the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and supports the implementation of internationally adopted standards on animal welfare. The Commission will continue to support the work of the OIE, also financially, to implement international animal welfare standards.

In 2019, the Commission started an evaluation of the EU animal welfare strategy 2012-2015 and the animal transport falls within its scope. The evaluation is expected to be completed by the end of 2020.

In parallel, in the context of the European Green Deal, the Commission intends to present a Farm to Fork Strategy this year, which will include actions for animal welfare.

Both the evaluation of the EU animal welfare strategy and the Farm to Fork Strategy will contribute to design future activities of the Commission in the field of animal welfare including on animal transport. The Commission will continue to closely monitor the situation on transportation of live animals including the implementation of the relevant legislation.
