Horse Ethics and Animal Liberation: How animalism affects equestrian practices
The animalist movement, which aims to radically renegotiate our ways of living alongside animals, seems currently to be gaining in popularity. Those in the horse world, whether amateurs or professionals, are directly concerned by its critique in that "exploitation" of animals is seen as an infringement of their freedom to live a free life in conditions conducive to the development of their individuality. Views on the ethics of keeping horses, whether from riders, ethologists, or animal activists, are sometimes contradictory and even hostile. However, such conflict can serve as a vector for a necessary renewal of our collective perceptions and inter-species practices. It could also offer an enhanced pathway to the promotion and improvement of animal and human welfare and well-being.
