Summary: The announcement by the French and German agriculture ministers of a ban on the disposal of male broiler chicks by the end of 2021 has revived interest in methods to determine the sex of chickens before they hatch. The latter are set out in a recent article by the Technical Institute of Poultry Farming (ITAVI). The criteria for selecting an ovosexing technique are based on ethical, economic and health considerations.
