Summary: Welfare is based on 4 main principles: food, shelter, health and behaviour.
Its assessment calls for the evaluation of various criteria using a different set of indicators for each species. These indicators can concern the animal (such as a runny nose, a change in behaviour, abnormal posture, etc.) or its environment (such as the availability of water).
This talk provides an overview of the indicators currently available for equids, whose use will depend on the purpose or context of assessment (by owners, professionals, scientists...) and on whether observations are made in their usual surroundings or while working.
A second webinar on the same theme was held a week later, presenting the new Cheval Bien-être Protocol, which assesses the welfare of sport, work and leisure horses and is intended for all keepers.
