Preview: Animal welfare (AW) is nowadays an important societal issue in livestock farming. The GoatWell project, based on multiple-partnership work with the industry and animal health professionals, aims to achieve an objective approach to the welfare of goats on farms, on the one hand by building a consensual protocol to assess the different aspects of the varied breeding systems found in France, and on the other by identifying practices that aim to improve the welfare of animals and to take account of individual characteristics and constraints of production systems and health contexts. With regard to these two areas, the various stakeholders in the sector (farmers, advisors and veterinarians) were asked to describe their perceptions of AW, its practical application on farms and any obstacles encountered in its implementation.
