Preview: The Belgian pig industry will soon introduce its own animal welfare label for the retail trade.

This certification guarantees that meat has been produced in line with animal welfare standards that exceed legal requirements, so that consumers can make a more deliberate choice. The news was  announced on Wednesday by the non-profit organisation Belpork, whose members are drawn from the agricultural, retail, meat and transport sectors.

"We have agreed on concrete measures with pig farmers, such as the provision of more space for the animals than is required by law or more materials for them to explore and manipulate," explains Liesbet Pluym, a coordinator for Belpork. "In the abattoirs, this relates, among other things, to the handling of the animals during loading and unloading, and effective stunning. There is agreement on 99% of the standards, we are currently still in consultation with individual retailers.

The Belpork label offers retailers such as butchers and supermarkets the opportunity to decide what is most important to them and their customers. They can thus lay down their own requirements in addition to the basic standards.
