Document type : Results of an Ifop survey for the Brigitte Bardot Foundation

Author: Jérôme Fourquet

Preview: A few weeks after the scandal provoked by the video of Kurt Zouma kicking his pet, the Brigitte Bardot Foundation commissioned a study from Ifop on French attitudes to animals. This study shows that a large majority of French people want their presidential candidates to express a position on the treatment of animals.
Indeed, nearly 86% of French people agree on the need for candidates to have a position on the issue and on current animal welfare measures. More than one in two (57%) of those questioned said that the candidates' proposals on the subject could influence their vote.
Additionally, the majority of French people support a range of measures aimed at improving the lives of animals. This is particularly the case where a ban on cage farming within five years is concerned (88%), on the need to fund alternatives to animal experimentation (76%), on penalties for acts of cruelty leading to death (87%), and on the obligation to stun farm animals before slaughter (90%).

Sampling methodology: The survey was conducted using a representative sample of 1,012 members of the French adult population (18+).  The sample's representativeness was ensured by using the quota method (respondent's gender, age and profession) following stratification by region and settlement size. The interviews were carried out by self-administered online questionnaires from 1 to 2 February 2022.
