Preview: Following the 'Understanding' and 'Assessment' guides, this booklet describes ways to improve farm animal welfare, focusing on the physical and social environments of the animals and on human-animal relationships and pain management . It also deals with how to care for animals during transport and slaughter. A number of mechanisms for welfare improvement are highlighted in particular, such as the creation of positive relationships based on a better understanding of animals, the integrated management of animal health and the promotion of solutions to eliminate, replace or mitigate painful practices.
How actions are implemented must of course be tailored to each farm, and must also respect the welfare of the farmer. This approach is part of the " one welfare" concept, where the benefits for animals, humans and the environment are closely linked.
This book is intended for students and professionals in the agricultural and veterinary sectors, as well as for any member of the public interested in farm animal welfare.
The 2021 Research Impact Award was won by the INRAE "Animal Welfare" group of researchers in ethology, physiology, neurobiology and genetics, some of whom are authors and contributors in this booklet.
