Document type: Written answer from the European Commission
Authors: Question: Emmanouil Fragkos (ECR). Answer: Executive VP Vestager on behalf of the European Commission
Answer: European competition law concerns business practices by economic undertakings. At this stage, the Commission has not received any information about business practices concerning the production and/or consumption of halal meat that would fall within the remit of the EU competition rules.
Moreover, given the local nature of most retail markets for food consumption, National Competition Authorities would be better placed than the Commission to assess any such practices to the extent they have any relevance from a competition law perspective.
