Pôle environnement et maltraitance animale : les associations saluent l’initiative de la Cour d’appel de Toulouse

Preview: In order to strengthen certain processes and to allow speedier intervention, the Toulouse Appeal Court decided, last Tuesday, to create an Environment and Animal Ill-treatment Unit.
This legal step forward was very well-received in some quarters. [...] The French Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) has [...] welcomed "an initiative that will facilitate procedures to help animals, particularly by reducing the time required for conviction".
Although this move has currently only been made by the Toulouse Appeal Court (Haute-Garonne, Tarn, Ariège, Tarn-et-Garonne), the SPA hopes to see it "roll out to all Appeal Courts in France".

A step forward in dealing with cases of frequent ill-treatment
Setting up this unit will allow the use of "simplified procedures for the least serious cases" and, when it is justified by the facts, the authority "to confiscate the animal", and "to hit the owner with a ban on keeping animals", said Franck Rastoul, Attorney General at the Toulouse Appeal Court .
Praising the court for 'waking up' to the need to act,  Reha Hutin, president of the Fondation 30 Millions d’Amis, deplored "the dismissal of cases of documented animal abuse [...].
The new unit will be managed by a team composed of Franck Rastoul, a project manager, and a legal expert.
