Presentation : For some years now, pro-animal movements and groups have attracted particular public attention: to the established associations who work for the "protection" of animals, have now been added groups who call instead for their "liberation". The common ground between them lies in their defence of the interests of animals. No objective overview has as yet been provided to French readers, taking stock of the social, political and moral characteristics of these movements. This book is intended to fill this gap by providing an overview of what we know on the history and organisational structure of animal activism today.
This overview begins with the 19th century before mapping contemporary movements. The reasons for animal activism and  the variety of its forms are analyzed, along with these movements' links to other social spheres (government policy, markets, academia).
The book thus provides the key tools for a sociological understanding of the ways that pro-animal movements are transforming our societies.
