Preview: The Ombudsman received a series of complaints about how the European Commission responded to the European Citizens' Initiative 'End the Cage Age', which sought to end the use of cage systems for various animals in agriculture. The complainants raised concerns about how the Commission was following up on its commitment to adopt, by the end of 2023, a legislative proposal in response to the Initiative, in particular following a statement made by the ice-President of the European Commission for Interinstitutional Relations.
The Ombudsmanopened an inquiry and asked the Commission to reply to the concerns raised by the complainants.
