Abstract in French (translation): Do windows matter in poultry housing? What animal welfare and behavior tell us
Although artificial lighting remains the norm in the poultry industry, the few available studies suggest that natural light may offer certain welfare benefits, such as increased activity, signs of reduced fear, and a preference among birds for naturally lit areas. However, findings regarding indicators of physical well-being are mixed; therefore, further research is needed to understand the beneficial effects of natural light on the health and well-being of broiler chickens.
Preview: Although artificial light remains the industry standard for lighting, limited research indicates that natural light may offer some potential welfare-related benefits, such as increased activity, some indication of reduced fearfulness, and birds’ preference for naturally lit areas. However, the results on physical welfare indicators are mixed; therefore, more research is needed to understand natural light’s beneficial effects on broiler health and welfare.
