Preview: The issue of phasing out crates for sows in farrowing and boar housing is now at the center of discussions on the future of pig farming. This transition responds to strong societal expectations regarding animal welfare, but it also raises many practical questions. Facilities, investment costs, animal management, work organization, farmer safety, and technical performance are all directly affected. Since each farm has its own constraints, it is essential to better understand the situations encountered on the ground.
That is why, at the request of the Ministry of Agriculture, Agri-Food, and Food Sovereignty, the IFIP is conducting a survey of pig farmers to identify the main barriers and motivations among industry stakeholders for making this transition, as well as the conditions necessary to consider this shift in systems.
These results will provide an accurate assessment of the current situation, enable objective economic evaluations, and identify any potential needs for training or feedback on experiences. This data will be freely available upon completion of the study, in early 2027, to help better anticipate the impacts of such a change and identify solutions to support farmers in this process.
