Preview: The banning of the use of crates for farrowing and the housing of boars is now a central issue in planning for the future of pig farming. This change comes as a response to strong societal expectations regarding animal welfare, but it also raises many practical questions. Farm buildings, capital costs, animal handling, work organization, farmer safety, and technical performance are all directly affected. Since every farm has its own constraints, it is essential to improve understanding of the real-life situations encountered by farmers.
For this reason, at the request of the French Ministry of Agriculture, Agri-Food, and Food Sovereignty, the IFIP is conducting a survey of pig farmers in order to identify the main barriers and drivers for industry stakeholders in relation to this transition, and to establish what the necessary conditions would be to consider this shift in farming systems.
The results will provide an accurate assessment of the current situation, enable objective economic asessments to be made, and identify any potential needs for training or for feedback from farmers on their experiences. The results will be freely available at the end of the investigation, in early 2027, to help the industry to better predict the impacts of such a change and identify solutions to support farmers in this process.
