Scientific review of the effect of heat stress on the behavior of lactating cows housed in composted bedding barns. It revealed that the most commonly used indicator of thermal comfort is the temperature and humidity index; that thermal stress increases drinking, moving, agonistic behaviors and dyspnea, and decreases feeding behaviors and lying time.

A scientific paper to determine the effects of weather and paddock soil conditions on the lying, feeding and rumination behavior of dairy cows kept in the open during winter. The authors show that in bad weather or muddy soil conditions, resting periods were shortened or even non-existent. They suggest that previous rainfall events and the presence of surface water should be used as indicators that resting times, and hence the welfare of outdoor dairy cows, may be negatively impacted.

Information note from eight European Union countries, including France, opposing the ban on the transport of live animals from member countries. The reasons given are 1. that this would favour imports from third countries with less stringent animal welfare standards, and 2. the difficulty of maintaining the cold chain when transporting meat. The eight countries recommend that enforcement of EU legislation should be strengthened and EU expertise should be shared with third countries to improve animal welfare during transport.

Scientific article on the validation of the contents of a tool to measure health-related quality of life in calves with respiratory disease. Using a survey and focus groups, the authors evaluated the usefulness of 23 indicators with stakeholders. The following indicators were selected: nasal discharge, coughing, respiratory effort, eye appearance (discharge and brightness), body and head posture and ear position; movement towards feed, responsiveness, spatial proximity, volume of feed intake, motivation to feed and vitality.

DG SANTE audit report concluding that, despite numerous checks on livestock transport carried out by the Spanish authorities, as implemented, these official controls made it impossible to either verify or confirm compliance with welfare requirements for the transport of unweaned calves over long distances.

Scientific article reporting on the results of an online survey testing the ability of humans to perceive levels of emotional arousal and distinguish between positive/negative emotions (valence) conveyed by the vocalisations of six species of wild and domestic ungulates. Respondents were better at assessing arousal levels, with less variations between individual species, than at identifying valence.
