Results of a CGAAER survey in 11 Member States and 5 third countries on their position on animal welfare (AW), covering topics such as an end to cage farming, painful practices, animal welfare labelling, transport and slaughter, competition from third countries with less strict AW standards, the fight against the abandonment of domestic carnivores, and rules specific to Equidae. Its purpose is to assist the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food in developing the new French animal welfare strategy.

However, the legislation on transport and slaughter is still inadequate, even in the case of organic farming.

The committee recognised that EU rules on the protection of animals during transport are not always respected and that the welfare needs of animals during transport are not always met. It recommends limiting and better monitoring the export of live animals, developing meat-and-carcass transport and banning the transport of very young animals.

A scientific paper to determine the influence of temperature and air enthalpy variations in live pig transport vehicles using welfare indicators. It shows that such variations are greater in winter, and are associated with higher cortisol and lower blood glucose levels in pigs, both indicators of heat stress.
