Preview: Cerpam (Centre d'études et de réalisations pastorales Alpes-Méditerranéennes) has just published two eight-page technical advice sheets  (in French) to help pastoralists manage their animals during summer grazing. The first sheet, Construction of secondary huts in mountain pastures, sets out the conditions, required amenities and the planning regulations to be followed when establishing a hut that is supplementary to a main hut. Designed to accommodate the shepherd for a maximum of three weeks, the minimum required for these huts includes heating, shower and toilet facilities for the shepherd and a space to store equipment and livestock supplies.

The second sheet, Storing water on grazing grounds and mountain pastures, reminds us of the importance of water for herds. Water storage is sometimes needed and the different systems and their costs are described, from concrete cisterns (above or below ground), rigid self-supporting metal or HDPE tanks, flexible tanks or open reservoirs.
