Document type: ANSES scientific opinion

Preview: ANSES was asked on March 2, 2020 by the Directorate-General for Food (DGAL) to assess particular risks related to the SARS-CoV-2 virus (disease agent COVID-19) within four days, and more specifically to comment on the potential role of domestic animals (livestock and pets) in the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and on the potential role of foodstuffs in the transmission of the virus.

The Agency endorses the conclusions of the “Covid-19” Emergency Collective Expert Appraisal Group (GECU). In this regard, it stresses the limited number of studies specifically available for this novel
Betacoronavirus. It notes that these conclusions are consistent with those provided in the communications available to date dealing with these aspects that have yet to be fully investigated
(communications of the World Health Organization and World Organisation for Animal Health, and some opinions by health agencies such as the Friedrich Loeffler Institut and BfR). The resulting
recommendations are in line with the strict hygiene measures indicated to prevent human-to-human transmission of the virus. ANSES will remain attentive to future information and studies that may lead it to modify this assessment.

This opinion was the subject of a news item on the ANSES website.
