Preview: Since 2012, the BBFAW (Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare) has been assessing the animal welfare policies of 150 food and agriculture companies worldwide. Danone ranks first among the listed French companies - and is the only French company to obtain Tier 2 status (out of 6), for which welfare must be integral to business strategy.

Many French companies are in Tier 3 (established but work to be done) at both ends of the food supply chain, from LDC and Terrena to Casino, Les Mousquetaires, Metro and Sodexo.

Tier 4 includes companies that are making progress on implementation (Auchan, Carrefour, Système U, Cooperl). Last, Leclerc and Lactalis are to be found at the tail end of the French pack, in Tier 5 (On the business agenda but limited evidence of implementation).

No French company has Tier 1 status  and "the UK has a clear leadership position", says the BBFAW (itself a UK company).

The report shows that 60% of the world's leading food companies now have formal farm food policies. CIWF responded to the report in a press release on April 2: "There is still plenty of work to be done, but there appears to be both an appetite and a willingness for change within the food industry [...]"
