Messages: Livestock farming supported by public money establishes a social contract placing expectations on health and welfare standards, professionalism, and medicine use. The livestock sector must be ready to recognise, apply and demonstrate best practice. -Effective progress on animal health and welfare is needed to improve resilience and farm profitability, providing a competitive advantage. Delivering improvements at scale needs coordination and a strategy that spans the four nations.-Widespread animal medicine best practice needs a model framework that uses both top down and bottom up approaches, and considers the nature of veterinary services, effective use of data, diagnostics, biosecurity and training. -An evidenced-based approach and international collaboration on the authorisation of animal medicines will support both the availability of medicines in the UK and the future development of innovative solutions.
