Preview: In order to effectively combat the abandonment of pets, the French Minister for Agriculture and Food announced an unprecedented action plan at the end of December. Developed in part under the French Covid Recovery Plan, it aims to raise awareness among the general public, organise and support the infrastructure of animal welfare associations while strengthening the penalties for abuse.
Since 1 January, a new funding scheme has become available for local animal protection associations, regardless of their size. It offers two types of aid:
- Help to finance sterilisation campaigns for cats or dogs (equipment, veterinary expenses);
- Funding for building works or equipment for pet shelters. Shelters for equids are also eligible. Thw fund can be used to repair and modernise existing refuges or to create new shelters.
The sums allocated to projects can range from €2,000 to €300,000 per project, and applications are processed by the Departmental Directorates for the Protection of Populations (DDPP or DDCSPP).
