Preview: Where ethology is used to study farm animals, it generates a consideration of the interactions between humans and animals in the course of farming activities. The quality of interactions between humans and animals is increasingly taken into account in livestock management as a means both to improve efficiency and to enhance farmers' quality of life and animal welfare. By studying the consciousness and emotions of animals, we demonstrate how animals integrate humans into their social networks. This enables us, by taking into account both the animal's and the farmer's point of view, to imagine what tomorrow's farming practices might look like.
