Preview: 80% of French people claim to be sensitive to animal welfare issues. The detailed figures show that 35% are very sensitive and 45% quite sensitive. Notwithstanding this, are the French prepared to change their habits and take action to support the animal cause?

Actions taken by French citizens

1 in 2 people have already made a donation and/or signed a petition to support animal protection (50%).

The survey results suggest that 14% of respondents have already made a donation, 23% have already signed a petition and 13% have already made a donation and signed a petition.

Do people pay attention to labels and certification?

In the YouGov Profiles for this survey, 29% of French people say they take account of the animal welfare label when shopping. This label is created by using more than 230 criteria to set a welfare level (from A to E) for a product that takes into account the whole life of the animal: from birth, through the conditions of its life on the farm, to its transport and slaughter.

The Cruelty Free label, for its part, guarantees the consumer that the product is 100% cruelty-free, i.e. no finished product or ingredient is allowed to have been tested on animals, and suppliers are required to provide a certificate confirming that they do not carry out animal testing. The brand also agrees to be audited at any time by an independent body.

When buying cosmetics, 62% of French people say it is important to them that products have a Cruelty Free label - rising to 70% among those who are sensitive to animal welfare.

Meat consumption

Some animal protection associations regularly publish shocking videos and images to show the violence suffered by animals on farms, during transport and in abattoirs for the purposes of meat production. In the view of nearly 2 out of 3 French people, this work is essential to raise awareness and bring about change (65%).

While 52% of French people and 58% of those who are sensitive to animal welfare issues say they are ready to pay more for meat from animal welfare-friendly farms, a number of French people say either that they are undecided (21%) or opposed to this idea (19%).

Towards a greater commitment to animal welfare?

64% of French people would be in favor of animal protection being included in the title of a ministry, for example the "Ministry of Ecological Transition and Animal Protection" - a figure that reaches 74% among people sensitive to the animal cause.

Additionally, 6 out of 10 French people say they view brands that are committed to animal protection more favourably (60%). There is a significant difference between men (55%) and women (64%).
