Preview: The discussions led to the conclusion that sterilisation should no longer be proposed as the sole answer to behavioural problems in dogs. The Le Chien Mon Ami association organised its first scientific study day, bringing together around 80 participants, mainly dog trainers, but also veterinarians, on 13 November 2021 at the Centravet site in Maisons-Alfort. The theme "Sterilisation and behaviour" was chosen because surgical sterilisation is often proposed as a remedy for many annoying or aggressive behaviours, or even for the problem of abandonment and for population management, not forgetting the fact that it is imposed on classified  working dogs, guide dogs and assistance dogs. A multidisciplinary debate, building on the experience of professionals involved in animal welfare and protection, made it possible to take stock of the certainties and uncertainties surrounding the influence of sterilisation on the behaviour of male and female dogs. Although studies are still needed to answer all the questions covered, it is agreed that sterilisation should no longer be offered to owners as the only answer to their dog's behaviour problems. Behavioural assessment and the possibility of reversible hormonal sterilisation are interesting alternative solutions available to vets.
