Document type : practical guide published by Phylum

Authors : Mathilde Clauss, François Gary

Presentation : As part of the animal welfare programme supported by the Danone Ecosystem Fund, Phylum's Mathilde CLAUSS and François GARY have produced, with contributions from a group of experts drawn from the SNGTV, IDELE and Vetagro Sup, a practical guide for veterinarians on the welfare of dairy cows, which accompanies the previously publishedguide for producers.

This guide focuses on the role of the veterinarian with respect to animal welfare and includes topics that directly affect the veterinarian's professional practice: pain management, transportability, euthanasia, animal longevity, etc. It provides veterinarians with a tool kit, including decision trees on transportability, euthanasia and culling. It also offers a methodology and a discussion tool on longevity so that veterinarians can address this topic in a practical way with producers. Last, it addresses the issue of change management, which is, in practice, a matter of communication and management. The tools for motivational interviewing and organisational change-management can be of use as a trigger for the adoption of better practices.
