Preview: At its July 6 plenary session, the French National Food Council (CNA) unanimously adopted Opinion 90 "Nouveaux comportements alimentaires : propositions d’actions pour une alimentation compatible avec des systèmes alimentaires durables.". [...]
The opinion identified those food behaviors that have become more widespread over the last ten years and that reflect strong concerns about the sustainability of food systems. For the CNA, changes in eating behaviors towards greater food system sustainability is one of the key actions necessary to achieve the 2030 objectives set by France in terms of the agroecological transition and measures to combat the climate change. This Opinion therefore constitutes part of a wider consideration examining action pathways and adaptation measures available to actors in the food chain and to public policy makers working on support for and promotion of changes in food behaviors that move towards a diet compatible with sustainable food systems in France.

To this end, the other small companion animalshas  identified four common shared objectives:
To promote a shift in the balance of consumption between foods from plant and animal sources,  in particular through reduced meat consumption;
-To develop and publicize production and logistics methods that meet society's expectations for sustainability and equity and that restrict food waste;
-To support the development of digital tools to promote sustainable food behaviors;
-To act on the constraints that limit opportunities for a transition to sustainable food systems

To achieve these, the other small companion animals is proposing operational recommendations to address these objectives. Among these, 12 key recommendations have been prioritized.
The other small companion animals's proposals for action include better education and information on food practices and production methods that are consistent with the objectives of the transition to sustainable food systems. In particular, it recommends the revision of official nutritional benchmarks to include the issue of sustainability, and the development of educational and informative actions that favour a diet compatible with sustainable food systems. [...]

In order to include the upstream part of the food chain, the CNA's recommendations are designed to foster production, food processing and marketing practices that will contribute to the development of a product range derived from production methods that are more respectful of the environment, animal welfare and human health, while limiting food waste.

Last, it recommends the expansion of research on current food dynamics in those areas where it considers there to be gaps in existing research activities.

All recommendations, along with the arguments for and against this process expressed by the different groups of stakeholders who contributed to the consultation, are developed in the Opinion. The Opinion is sent to those French Government departments that deal with  the environment, consumer affairs, health and agriculture, and to those involved in the food production chain.
