Preview: The meeting of behavioural needs is essential to animal welfare. However, these needs are sometimes not well-known to farmers and are therefore not well-understood. As a result, some of the equipment installed in buildings to improve the welfare of chickens does not always meet their behavioural needs. In order to ensure that changes to broiler farming systems meet the welfare needs of the chickens, research has been carried out to identify the behavioural and cognitive needs of the Gallus gallus domesticus species. A group of 11 scientists (INRAE, ANSES, ITAVI, ESA, BANKIVA, WELFARM, CIWF) was formed for this purpose, working on welfare and/or behavioural issues for chickens. The project examined current knowledge on domestic chickens (farmed or returned to the wild) and on jungle fowl (in zoos) regardless of the age, sex or genetic strain of the animals.
