Document type : technical instruction DGAL/SDSanimal welfare/2023-84 published in Bulletin Officiel of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty (MASA)

Author: Bureau du bien-être animal, MASA

Summary: As of December 31, 2021, live castration is prohibited and only veterinarians may perform castration operations on domestic pigs. By way of derogation, keepers of domestic pigs and their employees may perform castration of male piglets seven days of age or younger. They are permitted to apply any treatment involving analgesics or local anaesthetics on condition that the adminstration of these drugs is authorized to the public. After setting out the regulations, the present instruction specifies, on the one hand, the training requirements for the carrying out of castration protocols under local anaesthesia and analgesia and, on the other hand, details on how the derogation is to be implemented, defining the role of each individual involved.  Alternative methods of stopping the live castration of piglets are not addressed here. This instruction cancels and replaces Instruction DGAL/SDSanimal welfare/2021-866. Modifications appear in grey and concern the training requirements for keepers and their employees to perform castration protocols under local anaesthesia and analgesia and, more precisely: - the ways in which the first theoretical module is to be delivered in the absence of a veterinarian (II. a. i.) ; - the details of how the second practical module is to be delivered on site (II. a. ii.) ; - template for the attendance certificate for the theoretical module (annexe 1) ; - tempate for the attendance certificate for  the practical, on-site module (annex 2).
