Preview: After 20 years of negotiations, the European Union and the Mercosur member countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) announced the conclusion of a trade agreement on June 28, 2019. This agreement is an integral part of a broader association agreement, including a section on political dialogue and cooperation between the two regions, finalised on June 18, 2020. Its ratification was suspended following opposition from several EU Member States, notably because of its potential negative environmental and health impacts. The process was restarted and accelerated when the new Brazilian government took office in early 2023. The purpose of this note is to provide an overview of discussions on the content of the agreement and its ratification, and to set out the disastrous impacts it would have on the environment and health.
