Preview: Respect for animal welfare is a societal issue shared by all sectors working with small ruminants and it features as a priority in their action plans. This situation has led these sectors to take the step of designing an assessment and management tool that is agreed by all parties and adapted to French livestock farming systems, thus offering  better support for farmers in this area.
The CMOUBIENE project aims to provide the sheep (milk and meat) and goat sectors with tools to assess and manage the welfare of small ruminants on the farm, adopting a co-construction approach with stakeholders on the ground and in the relevant sectors.
The four guiding actions:

  1. The industry sets out its specification requirements for the creation of an operational tool to assess welfare, an economic model and the governance charter necessary for these to work.
  2. Indicative thresholds are set and data collection grids agreed, based on the list of indicators previously validated by the sheep and goat sectors.
  3. Operational grids are tested by the intended users designated in the specifications, with pilots in 30 farms per sector, so that the thresholds can be validated or altered and support for the planned tool can be put in place (computer support, user guide, action sheets to support farmers).
  4. Lessons learned are communicated and valorised and experiences with the modules and supporting materials are shared.
