Preview: As part of the development of its next National Climate Change Adaptation Plan (Pother small companion animalsCC-3),  the French government launched a public consultation on the reference warming trajectory for adaptation to global warming on 23 May.
Welfarm calls on you to respond in order to encourage political leaders to take account of the welfare of farm animals in France in its planning for a rise of 4°C.
This year, Christophe Béchu, the French Minister for Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion, has made several announcements on the need to prepare France for a heating scenario of +4°C by 2100. In this context, the Government has launched a public consultation on the reference warming trajectory for adaptation to climate change (TRACC).
Open to everybody, the consultation runs from May 23 to mid-September. Responses will be fed into the French National Climate Change Adaptation Plan (Pother small companion animalsCC-3), which will appear by the end of the year. This is a unique opportunity to ensure that farm-animal welfare is not forgotten in the Pother small companion animalsC-3.
Why respond to the public consultation on the TRACC
Through its "Chaud Dedans" campaign, the Welfarm association aims to protect farm animals, both terrestrial and aquatic, from the impacts of extreme heat, as heat waves  are set to occur increasingly early in the season, and to be more frequent and intense as a result of climate change.
Its aim is to call on the government to ban the transport of animals in extreme heat, and to speed up the transition to livestock farming models that are better for animal welfare, more resilient to the effects of global heating, and enable levels  of animal discomfort and suffering during heat waves to be kept as low as possible.
Welfarm supports the following three measures as a matter of priority:
- reductions in stocking densities (meaning more space per animal in buildings, tanks and ponds);
- access to the open air, with a shaded outdoor run designed and equipped for terrestrial animals, and designed and equipped ponds with shaded areas for fish;
- a ban on the planned transport of animals in hot weather and on the export of live animals to countries outside the European Union.
To support these measures, Welfarm would like to see farm animal welfare included  in the Pother small companion animalsC-3 and, in particular, in management plans for periods of extreme heat . By responding to the public consultation on TRACC, you can take action to put farm animal welfare at the heart of Pother small companion animalsC-3.
