Preview : Life begins with an egg. This is the way of things for all animals, from invertebrates to mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles. However, every species develops its own parenting behaviors, and animals can be surprisingly creative in this area of activity. Cockroaches "nurse" their young, frogs grow their tadpoles in marsupial pouches, while birds build nests whose complexity almost makes them works of art. Meanwhile,  kangaroos are able to delay an embryo's  development, putting it on hold for several months!
Raymond Nowak describes all stages of parenthood, beginning with mating, pregnancy, egg-laying and birth. These are followed by education, care of one's young and, eventually, separation. Parenthood does not always involve affection, but it often involves sacrifice because it has a clear goal: to keep the line going.
