Preview: animal welfare is a central concern for the French public, as shown by the latest IFOP and Fondation 30 Millions d'Amis survey carried out in February 2024. While the need for animal welfare is now becoming a matter of course,  so sensitive is the public to it, welfare levels nevertheless remain variable depending on the category of animal involved (companion, farm or wild animals) and where they live (in a household, shelter, farm or a natural setting). My background in animal protection, first as a volunteer, then as a professional, and my training in this field, have led me to examine the issue of animal welfare in shelters. Given my commitment to a holistic vision of welfare, though, which is anchored in a professional career path specialising in helping people and animals, I have given equal consideration  to human welfare throughout my time working in animal protection. Here, I take an innovative look at the symbiotic relationship that needs to exist  between animal and human welfare if we are to ensure the continuation of a relationship based on help and support in facilities and organisations that take in animals.
