Preview: ChickenTrack 2023 looked at both the transparency and progress of 85 companies concerning actions to improve animal welfare on chicken farms. "It is encouraging to see that the proportion of companies reporting on their transition has increased from 39% in 2022 to 65% in 2023," states the annual report published by CIWF. Of the 350 European companies surveyed, 21 published their first reports to Better Chicken Commitment (BCC). Among them was Burger King (France). What is more, France was described as "the most widely represented country in ChickenTrack".  34 French companies were assessed in 2023, of which two were producers, six were processors, 13 were catering companies and 13 were distributors. Meanwhile, at the European level, French companies "reported publicly on their progress" in the greatest numbers, with 23 out of 34 doing so, i.e. 68% compared to 43% in 2022. Among these 23 French companies, ten were distributors. But companies upstream also held their own. Several French consortia are also involved in this transition, including Galliance France and LDC, which published its first report on its "BCC-compliant volumes" in 2023.
Significant delays to transition remain
That said, the European companies involved in BCC (producers, processors, commercial caterers, contract caterers and hotels, and distribution) were still dragging their feet in two areas of transition: slower-growing strains and reduced densities. The most significant improvements concerned provision of natural light and enrichment.
