Preview: Farmers from the Pays de Retz and northern Vendée have just announced the creation of a local multi-species abattoir in Machecoul-Saint-Même. A mobile unit, the first of its kind in France, will also be set up in this Loire-Atlantique commune. The Salvae abattoir will have a mobile unit enabling animals to be slaughtered on the farm. With the Challans abattoir closing its doors in 2019, livestock farmers in the southern Loire-Atlantique and northern Vendée regions who sell their produce directly have been left without local provision. The Machecoul project is supported by the farmers and adapted to their needs," stresses Guylain Pageot, a farmer from Villeneuve-en-Retz and founding member of the abattoir. We'll be able to take in pigs, sheep, goats and cattle. Farmers will make their own appointments and bring their animals themselves. The fixed slaughterhouse unit will be set up in Machecoul on a plot of land in the Seiglerie zone by 2025. It will operate like a conventional abattoir. (...)
