Abstract in French (translation): Monitoring the Health and Welfare of White-Legged Shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) in Aquaculture
This IGB handbook provides an overview of the current global status of white-legged shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) farming. It focuses on the welfare of shrimp in aquaculture, with an emphasis on morphological changes observed under stressful conditions. Morphological lesions are illustrated with figures, accompanied by recommended observation procedures. Experimental results and field observations are described to support the interpretation of the indicators. This IGB manual is specifically intended for professionals, companies, and associations in the aquaculture sector to promote animal welfare aspects in shrimp farming. It can also serve as a reference for experiments or routine on-farm observations, particularly on a small scale, where standardized operational protocols are often less developed. Shrimp experts are invited to share their comments and suggestions and to submit completed morphological index forms to enrich the dataset.
