Welfare of farm animals : studying it to improve it

Stéphane Ingrand, Xavier Fernandez

Published in 2022

Scientific study of the impact of research carried out at INRAE over the last 30 years with the aim of improving the welfare of farm animals. This research has led to the implementation of new national and European regulations, and the adoption of new practices and equipment in animal husbandry.

The 2020 Five Domains Model: Including Human-Animal Interactions in Assessments of Animal Welfare

David J. Mellor, Ngaio J. Beausoleil, Katherine E. Littlewood , Andrew N. McLean, Paul D. McGreevy, Bidda Jones, Cristina Wilkins

Published in 2020

Scientific review on the concept of the 5 domains. The first 3 domains (food, physical environment and health) concern factors that can affect an organism's internal stability, and lead to so-called "survival-critical" affects, resulting in genetically-integrated behavioral responses. The 4th domain (behavioral interactions), generates "situation-related" affects, resulting in conscious behavioral choices. All of these contribute to the 5th domain, ie the mental state of the animals.

The Case for Ending Beak Trimming

Diane A. Austry

Published in 2022

CAWF report on chick beak trimming in the UK. It highlights the high level of pain and stress associated with the practice, which interferes with the natural behaviours of foraging, nest-building and interaction with conspecifics. It considers that the reason for the practice, pecking, could be prevented by changes to flock management.

Canine-Assisted Interventions and the Relevance of Welfare Assessments for Human Health, and Transmission of Zoonosis: A Literature Review

Lieve Lucia Meers, Laura Contalbrigo, William Ellery Samuels, Carolina Duarte-Gan, Daniel Berckmans, Stephan Jens Laufer, Vicky Antoinette Stevens, Elizabeth Ann Walsh, Simona Normando

Published in 2022

Review of the different aspects of welfare involved in dog-assisted interventions (DAIs) and their relevance to the health and safety of DAI participants. It highlights the potential for dog welfare to be compromised during DAIs and suggests that regular dog welfare assessments should be carried out to ensure the quality of DAIs.

Graduate Student Literature Review: Role of pain mitigation on the welfare of dairy calves undergoing disbudding

Cassandra N. Reedman, Todd F. Duffield, Trevor J. DeVries, Kerry D. Lissemore, Charlotte B. Winder

Published in 2022

Scientific review describing the disbudding techniques used in North America on dairy calves and assessing the welfare implications of the different pain-reduction techniques used in the procedure. It identifies the need for research to improve assessment of the pain felt by animals undergoing disbudding, to better understand the effects of xylazine sedation, and to determine other ways to reduce recovery times and the pain experienced by calves following disbudding.

Foraging Behavior Shows Individual-Consistency Over Time, and Predicts Range Use in Slow-Growing Free-Range Male Broiler Chickens

Vitor Hugo Bessa Ferreira, Arthur Simoni, Karine Germain, Christine Leterrier, Léa Lansade, Anne Collin, Sandrine Mignon-Grasteau, Elisabeth Le Bihan-Duval, Elodie Guettier, Hélène Leruste, Hanne Løvlie, Ludovic Calandreau, Vanessa Guesdon

Published in 2022

Scientific paper describing the behavioural budget of slow-growing male broilers (S757N) in their social group and usual environment throughout the rearing period, and relating observed behavioural differences in use of space. It shows that foraging (pecking and scratching) can be used as a behavioural predictors of range limits in free-range broilers.

Vitor Hugo Bessa Ferreira, Arthur Simoni, Karine Germain, Christine Leterrier, Léa Lansade, Anne Collin, Sandrine Mignon-Grasteau, Elisabeth Le Bihan-Duval, Elodie Guettier, Hélène Leruste, Ludovic Calandreau, Vanessa Guesdon

Published in 2021

Scientific paper showing that the use of runs by free-range broilers is probably related to the individual exploratory character of the animals. It suggests that individual differences between free-range broilers are present even before access is provided to runs.
