Outside enclosure and additional enrichment for dairy goats

Knut Egil Bøe, Rebecca Ehrlenbruch, Inger Lise Andersen

Published in 2012

A scientific paper investigating the effects of access to an outdoor pen and environmental enrichment on the activity pattern and social behavior of Norwegian dairy goats kept on slatted floors with limited space. It shows that the goats prefer to use the outdoor pen when they are active, and view branches as an attractive enrichment.

Resting pattern and social interactions in goats—The impact of size and organization of lying space

Inger Lise Andersen, Knut Egil Bøe

Published in 2007

Scientific paper showing that the time Norwegian dairy goats spent resting and their resting habits depended more on the size than the lay-out of the lying space, while social interactions depended more on the lay-out than on the size of the lying space.

Glucocorticoids in relation to behavior, morphology, and physiology as proxy indicators for the assessment of animal welfare. A systematic mapping review

Inga Tiemann, Lisa B. Fijn, Marc Bagaria, Esther M. A. Langen, F. Josef van der Staa3, Saskia S. Arndt, Cathalijn Leenaars, Vivian C. Goerlich

Published in 2023

A systematic review of the literature to determine whether glucocorticoid levels are a relevant indicator of animal welfare. It found that interventions that supposedly affect glucocorticoid levels do not always do so, and when they do, the changes in level are not always accompanied by changes in the associated welfare endpoints of behavior, morphology and physiology.

Effect of Heat Stress on the Behavior of Lactating Cows Housed in Compost Barns: A Systematic Review

Authors: Karen Dal' Magro Frigeri, Matheus Deniz, Flávio Alves Damasceno, Matteo Barbari, Piotr Herbut, Frederico Márcio Corrêa Vieira

Published in 2023

Scientific review of the effect of heat stress on the behavior of lactating cows housed in composted bedding barns. It revealed that the most commonly used indicator of thermal comfort is the temperature and humidity index; that thermal stress increases drinking, moving, agonistic behaviors and dyspnea, and decreases feeding behaviors and lying time.

Domestic hens succeed at serial reversal learning and perceptual concept generalization using a new automated touchscreen device

Rachel Degrande, Fabien Cornilleau, Léa Lansade, Plotine Jardat, Violaine Colson, Ludovic Calandreau

Published in 2022

Scientific paper testing the effectiveness of an automated device for performing cognitive tests in domestic fowl: a simple test, a serial instruction reversal learning task; and a more complex test, and a delayed sample matching task. The results reveal the behavioral flexibility and conceptual understanding of domesticated hens. They also demonstrate the value of using automated devices to improve our knowledge of farm animal cognition.

Effects of Animal Welfare-Certified Rearing Systems on the Blood Parameters and Meat Quality Characteristics of Broilers at the Farm Level in Korea

Jin-Joo Jeon, Hee-Jin Kim, Hye-Jin Kim, HHwan-Ku Kang, Chan-Ho Kim, Hyun-Soo Kim, Bo-Seok Kang, Sang-Ho Kim, Aera Jang

Published in 2023

Scientific paper showing that management practices in Korean broiler farms certified for animal welfare have clear effects on blood parameters, meat quality and content of bioactive compounds compared to conventional farms. The authors attribute  these improvements to plant-based protein supplements and the increase in space for movement due to the low stocking densities in the certified farms.

Improving animal welfare status and meat quality through assessment of stress biomarkers: A critical review

Pavan Kumar, Muideen Adewale Ahmed, Abubakar Ahmed Abubakar, Muhammad Nizam Hayat, Ubedullah Kaka, Mokrish Ajat, Yong Meng Goh, Awis Qurni Sazili

Published in 2022

Scientific review of the various stress biomarkers most commonly used in animal husbandry and the factors that influence their expression. The focus is on the use of meat biomarkers, which would allow the non-invasive prediction of meat quality, but also on animal stress before slaughter.

Developing a tool to assess the health-related quality of life in calves with respiratory disease: content validation

D.J. Bell, B. Vigors, C.-A. Duthie, D.J. Bartram, A. Hancock, I. Odeyemi, C. Penny, M.J. Haskell

Published in 2022

Scientific article on the validation of the contents of a tool to measure health-related quality of life in calves with respiratory disease. Using a survey and focus groups, the authors evaluated the usefulness of 23 indicators with stakeholders. The following indicators were selected: nasal discharge, coughing, respiratory effort, eye appearance (discharge and brightness), body and head posture and ear position; movement towards feed, responsiveness, spatial proximity, volume of feed intake, motivation to feed and vitality.
