Summary: The aim of this project was to provide horse owners with a protocol for assessing the welfare of their horses that is simple to implement in the field yet comprehensive enough to provide reliable results. It is the result of a collaboration between the IFCE, INRAE Centre Val de Loire and the University of Milan. This horse welfare assessment protocol was based on the AWIN Horse protocol, developed as part of a European research project, for horses living in loose boxes. A number of experimental and field studies have been carried out to validate this protocol and update it with the latest scientific knowledge.
