Preview: This is an appalling record for the mass abandonment of animals. The situation is worse for them following lockdown. The government intends to punish less careful owners more severely, and money is to be pumped back into the shelters.

A new life begins for Spike, a 5 year old dog, recovered by the pound from the public highway. He spent eight days wandering the streets before finding a place in a SPA shelter. "The owner did not come forward, so the dog can now be transferred  to a shelter to be offered for adoption. At the moment the pound is full, it's not going to get any better," laments Christophe Dumont-Richet, SPA director in Marennes (Rhône).

Everyone helps

147 cats and 42 dogs live together in the dog runs and catteries of the SPA. This figure is unheard of during the summer months. To ensure that adoptions go as smoothly as possible, the staff do their utmost to be confident that adopters can be trusted. Because of the lack of space, 92 kittens have been placed in foster homes, and the staff are also taking them in. As for Spike, he is about to spend his first night in the shelter.
