Preview: Animal living conditions are now a major and lasting concern for consumers, who are concerned not only about product quality but also about production methods. Environmental impacts, farming conditions and fair returns at all stages of production are now core concerns. Agricultural cooperatives in France want to fulfil both these expectations and their fundamental mission towards their members, and are working constantly to advance standards of animal welfare practices, adopting an approach that looks at the whole picture, giving weight to the interactions between humans, animals and the environment, and is also multi-dimensional, embracing knowledge from many disciplines, from veterinary medicine to sociology and jurisprudence. This approach is inspired by the concept of "One Welfare", which has been promoted by the Coopération Agricole for some years, and which has guided the entirety of this dossier's production, from the choice of initiatives to chapter organisation: every initiative presented in this collection improves both the welfare of animals and the welfare of the people who are in contact with them.
