Preview: CIWF has today published the first edition of its European ChickenTrack report. This new tool is intended to monitor the progress of companies that have signed up to Better Chicken Commitment (BCC), including French companies, many of whom have done so.
Better Chicken Commitment: a major step forward for broiler welfare
Better Chicken Commitment is an initiative headed by more than 30 NGOs in Europe, including CIWF, which asks companies involved in the food industry to commit to improving the conditions under which broilers are reared (reduced density, environmental enrichment, slower-growing breeds) and slaughtered by 2026. Since its launch in 2017, more than 270 European companies have committed to the BCC in Europe, including KFC, Subway, and Domino's Pizza Enterprise; Unilever, Nestlé, and Danone; Elior, Sodexo, as well as Compass and API Restauration; Waitrose, Carrefour Poland, and nearly all French retailers.
The BCC approach is the biggest change in broiler welfare in Europe for more than a decade, and implements the EU Broiler Protection Directive. The growing number of commitments from all parts of the food industry in France and Europe is a positive and crucial first step in making the BCC criteria into the standards of the future, but time is running out. Much remains to be done to meet the 2026 deadline: parent flocks need to be established and expanded, contracts need to be signed, product offers need to be revised and consumers need to be committed to this transition if it is to succeed.
ChickenTrack: a new transparency tool
ChickenTrack is designed to encourage companies who have made the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC) to report clearly and transparently on progress within their supply chains. ChickenTrack has been developed along the same lines as the EggTrack tool, which tracks companies' progress in their transition to cage-free housing in egg production, and whose 5th report has just been published. These tools have been designed by CIWF to ensure that companies are delivering on their commitments, to encourage transparency, to give visibility to committed producers, and to support companies in their transitions.
ChickenTrack 2021 is a preliminary report that summarises key progress in the market over the last 12 months, highlights good practice by those who have already started to report on their progress, and proposes a reporting framework for companies in preparation for ChickenTrack 2022.
In France, the transition has begun and needs to become a reality
Since 2017, 75 French companies have signed up to the BCC.
The French retail sector now leads Europe in terms of broiler welfare commitments. Indeed, almost all retailers are now committed to the BCC principles for 100% of their fresh and frozen chicken and for own-brand processed products containing over 50% chicken. This transition should be completed by 2026.
As the ChickenTrack 2021 report points out, some French retailers (e.g. Carrefour, Casino) have already begun reporting publicly on their progress for all BCC criteria.
Alongside these commitments, more than 60% of French retailers (Groupe Casino, Carrefour, Système U, Les Mousquetaires, Lidl) operate under the chicken sector's Animal Welfare Label, whose Level C is based on the BCC's farmed criteria. The Animal Welfare Label offers a clear and transparent way of communicating with consumers and involving them in the transition.
Other French food sectors have also made a major commitment to the BCC. ChickenTrack 2021 highlights the reports already published by KFC France, by Elior France for the catering industry, and by Sodebo for the processing industry, but much still remains to be done by those working in these sectors.
Upstream companies have not been left behind in this transition, since key players such as Galliance have also committed to producing increasing volumes of chicken that meet the BCC criteria.
